“Kagami Biraki” For a Toast In Japanese Style! Wedding Ceremony With a Japanese Feel

The Meaning of Kagami Biraki

Kagami Biraki is a traditional custom of celebration, said to have spread since the early Edo period, in which the round lid of a sake barrel is opened by hitting it with a mallet to resemble a mirror.
Both sake and mirrors are used in Shinto rituals and are believed to have the meaning of opening good luck.
The circle on the lid represents marital bliss, and tapping the lid to open it means “to create a happy future together. It is also an auspicious gesture to serve the sake inside to everyone present.
If your wedding has a Japanese theme, such as a ceremony at a shrine, a Kagami-Biraki is the perfect presentation.
The origin of the word “yosho” (meaning “good luck”) when opening the mirror with a wooden mallet is not known. The word “yosho” contains the word “good” and can be said to bring good luck, so if everyone shouts “yosho” in a loud voice, the guests will feel more united and the wedding will be more exciting.

Performance Of Kagami Biraki

After the sake barrels are opened, it is time for the toast.
Since it takes time to pour sake for all the guests, the staff often distributes the same sake to the guests in advance and proceeds with the toast.Other examples of how sake barrels can be used to create an at-home atmosphere after the Kagami-Biraki ceremony include placing a sake barrel on a cart like a beer server and pouring sake around, or setting up a sake barrel in the venue at all times and allowing guests to freely pour their own sake.
The sake barrel can be filled not only with sake, but also with wine, sweets, stuffed animals, etc., depending on your ideas. This allows the couple to create their own unique performance.

“Tamanohikari” is one of the most recommended sake in Kyoto. The brewery was the first in the industry to revive junmai sake, which offers the true taste of sake without added alcohol. Junmai sake attempts to bring out the true flavor of the sake rice, and it also complements Japanese cuisine. If you want to enjoy the aroma, fruity Junmai Ginjo Sake is recommended.
